Team Events

If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.

A Different Type of Team Event

Only one leadership course stands out as having had an enduring impact on my own personal growth, revealing leadership lessons that I still refer to in coaching conversations today. ‘Leadership Skills using the Outdoors’ took place on a farm and utilised the surroundings in various imaginative ‘spy’ games. I was a newly promoted Nursing Sister in the company of colleagues, most of whom were senior to me in our roles outside this event. It was a great levelling experience, and I got to witness the best and worst of leadership styles in action.

I never forgot the creativity that was unleashed by removing people from their usual context and, over the years, developed my own style of facilitation that draws heavily on metaphor to encourage more lateral thinking. Using the outdoors worked for me – but it doesn’t work for everyone, and isn’t always practical. Luckily, history and the world around us are full of wonderful metaphors bursting with relevance to leadership and business. We just need a moment to notice and make the connection.

I've had the pleasure of participating in three of Karen's online seminars which have been fantastic. Karen takes a topic, sometimes based on history, sometimes on her own personal experience, and uses this as a powerful metaphor, encouraging participants to consider things from a different perspective and applying the learning to their work context. The seminars have been engaging and informative, and Karen is clearly passionate about the subjects of the seminars and the lessons we can learn today in our leadership roles.

Karen is extremely talented at finding alternative angles and considerations in coaching and converting historical happenings into business lessons is an extension of that skill. Karen's events are always interesting and I always come away from these events with plenty of positive lessons to think about, which is why I encourage the whole Six Ticks team to attend as well. I'd highly recommend both these events and Karen's coaching.
